On Day Three, we’re helping you to get Cyber Ready!
Being prepared for emergencies includes being prepared for cyber security incidents. Cyber security incidents can occur at any time and can impact any individual, business, or organisation.
In the last financial year, more than $2.5m was lost to scammers in South Australia.*
Cybercriminals are constantly looking for ways to obtain information and money, so it’s important to be vigilant and take proactive steps to protect yourself and your information when online.
By verifying the source, knowing how to spot a scam and keeping the applications and software on your device updated, you can help protect yourself from losing your identity, your reputation or your life savings.
Tips for staying secure
o Scammers make unsolicited calls impersonating well known businesses. If in doubt, hang up and ring the organisation back on a known reputable number. Don’t trust contact details given to you by a caller.
o Be aware of requests for unusual payment methods, such as cryptocurrency or gift cards. Once money is placed into a crypto ATM, it will never be seen again.
o Don’t be intimidated online by technical language or pushy behaviour. If in doubt, stop contact immediately and get in touch with the organisation they are claiming to be, using known and reputable contact details.
o Cyber criminals hack devices by using known weaknesses in systems or apps. Regular updates are critical in maintaining a secure system. It's important to check for updates. Switch on automatic updates too.
